So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Sixty Seven

So today’s been a mixture of housework, cooking and watching Lie to Me whilst playing computer games.

Things I have learnt today:
  • Valentine Warner’s recipe for stuffed marrow (although I’ll be fair to him and say I didn’t use his stuffing) isn’t a winner. I chose it as it was the less time-consuming method of cooking marrow (the Hairy Biker’s one involved boiling it first). Having finally got round to eating some for lunch I discovered that although I had baked the marrow for forty five minutes (as per the recipe) and then reheated it in the microwave for five, the marrow wasn’t properly cooked. When I was a kid my mum used to make stuffed marrows occasionally and I always remember the marrow as being juicy and tender, not hard. Even another five minutes did nothing so eventually I put it in one of my microwave bowls and steamed it for another ten minutes. That finally did the trick. Note to self: Boil marrow in future before using. The good thing is that marrow is pretty low in carbs so it makes for a good meal and tasted delicious with the vegetable mince that I used in the aubergines last week.
  • I am still capable of overcooking bacon, even when I bake it in the oven. Sadly, even though I kept an eye on it, some of it still came out burnt rather than just crispy

Dinner this evening was pork stroganoff with buttered green vegetables followed by some chocolate cream for dessert.

Day Sixty Six

Sorry, late night so I didn’t get this posted yesterday.

I met an old crafting friend of mine at Lakeside this morning. I’m not really a shopping type of person so don’t tend to spend much time in malls so it was quite a novel experience for me. Fortunately it wasn’t too busy, but it was full of temptation!

The first place we went was to Starbucks, where I was informed they were doing special seasonal flavours of drinks. I don’t drink coffee and therefore wasn’t tempted by the gingerbread latte and all those other lovely sounding things, but I do love their tea Chai Latte and it was hard not order one (the vente size that I normally drink works out about 56g of carbs per portion!) I was very good though and stuck to a cup of normal tea with some whole fat milk – not quite so tasty, but certainly more virtuous.

Fortunately I had a protein shake before I left as the whole place was designed to tempt you with food. I’ve not really noticed this before, but I suspect that as I’m actively avoiding all those things that are on sale in the shopping centre it was far more obvious to me. Everywhere we went there was food on sale. From ice cream to cupcakes to cookies to smoothies – and all of them smelt lovely. After a few hours of walking around I was absolutely starving. But it was almost impossible to find anything that could be eaten on the hoof without massively breaking the carb limit.

I did manage to stay strong and not have anything to eat so was more than ready for my chicken in tarragon and lemon sauce and salad when I finally got home.

There was just enough time to eat before heading out for the evening – to the Prince Charles Cinema to see Labyrinth – during which several (and I’ll be honest I lost count, although I think it was four) extra strong mints were consumed. Fortunately after yesterday’s blow out with the cider, today’s carbs were much more reasonable.

Arriving home at almost 1am I was starving and treated myself to some of the almond cheesy garlic bread (I’d got it out of the freezer for dinner, but then remembered I was going out) along with some prosciutto and a greek yoghurt.

Today’s exercise:  hours and hours of walking round Lakeside followed by a trek across London in full fancy dress
Carb's Eaten: 29.3G
Exercising to: The divine music of Mr Bowie - Labyrinth rules!

Day Sixty Five

Sorry, I've been MIA again, this time due to a general reluctance to post. Not entirely sure why this is, although to begin with it was due to lack of time, followed by laziness after a few days had gone by. But it's time to get back on track and where better to start than with an epic fail day.

It began well enough with me getting to the gym for 6.15am and managing a fairly decent workout followed by a protein shake, but went downhill just slightly when I went for a late lunch at the pub with some friends (Wexford steak and salad as ever) and had three glasses of wine.

Once home I decided to compound the problem by drinking that bottle of fruit cider that I'd bought all those weeks ago whilst having the usual picky dinner of prosciutto and cheese. The cider was a really bad idea, and as soon as I'd drunk it I knew it was a mistake. It was really sweet and I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as I was expecting to. It was definitely a complete waste of carbs - I'd have been better off having a decent pasta meal or something!

I haven't been able to accurately calculate the carbs as there appears to be no nutritional info anywhere on the internet for fruit cider, but according to Fitday the equivalent amount of carbs for normal apple cider is 91.8!!!!!

So as you can see I made a huge blunder with the cider, and worse still didn't even enjoy it. This is obviously going to impact on my weight loss, which is annoying because I really needed to lose weight this week to boost my flagging enthusiasm for this way of eating. It just goes to show how one reckless decision can undo days (weeks?) of good work.

Today’s exercise:  Bike = 10 mins; Stretching = 10 mins; Treadmill/weights = 10 mins; Cross Trainer = 10 mins;  Arm Bike = 12 mins; Stretching = 10 mins;  Swimming = 40 lengths

Day Sixty One

Having a little trouble getting going this morning, but I did manage to get to the gym by 6.30am. After my recent troubles with food I was pleased to see that my weight had stayed the same. Normally I’d have been disappointed with this, but after a week which included donuts, beer and several days over the limit, I think it has to be considered a good result. My left leg is still bruised and sore from last week’s fall and my knees were playing up big time so I had a slightly shortened workout but still managed to get a fair bit done.

After yesterday’s waver on the eating front I decided I needed to take a radical approach. A trip to Asda this morning gave me the usual prosciutto, ham and soy milk, but I also decided that I’m not going to worry too rigidly about the carb limit for the next few weeks until I can get myself back on track. To that end I bought some of the carbier vegetables – courgettes, peppers, aubergines etc. to try and kickstart myself back into eating.

Breakfast was a banana cream protein shake, lunch was prosciutto and some Babybel cheeses, so not much change there from the last few days, but this evening I cooked stuffed aubergine – and I have to say it was lovely. I even forced myself to have some buttered green vegetables with it, having bought some fresh ones today and that was good too. The best thing is that the carb count wasn’t as high as I was expecting and so I ended the day within my limit, and that was even after a treat of chocolate cinnamon cream for dessert.

I also bought a marrow and so I’m going to use the remainder of the mince mixture to stuff that and then slice into portions and freeze so it’ll give me something different for meals. The best thing is that it showed me that I do still have the appetite when given something a little different from the things I’ve been eating recently.

Today’s exercise:  Bike = 10 mins; Stretching = 10 mins; Treadmill/weights = 10 mins; Cross Trainer = 10 mins;  Arm Bike = 12 mins; Bike = 5 mins; Arc Trainer = 5 mins; Stretching = 10 mins;  Swimming = 30 lengths

Day Sixty

So I think it’s time to admit something I’ve been trying to get my head around for a few days.

I’m having a really big problem with food right now.

Although I have a fridge and freezer full of meat and vegetables I’m finding it harder and harder to find something I WANT to eat. Every day is turning into a battle and it’s beginning to get me down. It’s also making it harder for me to stick to this way of eating as I consider ‘forbidden’ foods in an attempt to find something I want to eat (although being honest there’s not much I’m considering there either).

I suspect that partially the problem is that I’ve been eating pretty much the same thing for two months now and I need a change. However, with my dislike of cooking unless I’m really in the mood, and with my sometimes finicky tastes in food it’s not that easy to find new things to eat that are low in carbs.

I have always been a carnivore and a meal really isn’t a meal to me unless it contains some meat or fish – I don’t really do vegetarian options. Since the weather has started to get cooler I’m finding it harder to eat salad, as this has always been a summer food for me. But the range of vegetables that I can safely eat on phase one is rather limited, especially once you remove all the stuff I don’t like and I’ve discovered that there’s only so many meals you can have the using the same mangetout/broccoli /asparagus/green beans/ courgette/cabbage mix without becoming sick of it. There is, of course, that good old standby eggs and bacon, but even that gets boring after a few days and there is a need for ‘green’ carbs rather than just protein and fat based carbs, so it’s also not ideal. The same problem also applies to my usual grab foods, ham, cheese and prosciutto.

It doesn’t help that I’m generally not feeling very hungry these days anyway (I guess 4  (ish) litres of water a day will do that to you), but my appetite is being suppressed further by lack of desire for any of the food I currently own.

There is a knock on effect to this. The food that I’m not eating is obviously going out of date and in the case of the salad and vegetables it goes all mushy and starts to rot. Normally I don’t have a problem dealing with old food, just throwing it away and buying some more, but at the moment I can’t face eating lettuce because a few days ago I threw out a bag that had gone all limp and slimy and all I can think of is that. It doesn’t matter that the current stuff is fine; it’s not, in my brain. And since the problem with the woody and undercooked vegetables the other day I just can’t bring myself to eat any more of them either.

And so that brings me onto the protein shakes. Although they’re fine within this way of eating, are very low in carbs and are good for exercising too, since I’ve begun drinking the flavoured ones (as I think I worried about before I ordered them) I’ve become addicted to them. To the extent, in fact, that at the moment I’d seriously give up eating anything else at all pretty much just to drink them instead.

This is obviously not good for a million reasons, but I’m not quite sure how I can change my mindset and get back on track. It may be that I just need to go completely off-track for a few days to shock me back into low carbing, but I don’t really want to do that either as I’m having enough trouble losing weight already without deliberately sabotaging it.

So far today I’ve had some smoked salmon with cream cheese and several glasses of water. I will be having a protein shake at some point and, maybe as my carbs are so low today, a yoghurt – both of which I can just about stomach. I obviously should be eating something proper, but at the moment I just can’t think of anything that I can really face eating.

Day Fifty Nine

Late again due to dashing off to a bonfire party last night. Far too excited at the idea of blowing up stuff to blog.

Nothing much to report yesterday really. Breakfast was a raspberry ripple shake, lunch/tea was bacon, scrambled eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes and late night food was a lovely shish and doner kebab due to the need to get my food intake up.

I had one trebor mint during the fireworks, and will admit to having had one mini sausage roll (which I haven’t logged as I can’t work out the carbs) along with a cup of tea after the event. Once again I finished just over the 30 grams, but it’s liveable with.

Day Fifty Eight

I had a rotten night’s sleep although I’m not sure why. This, along with getting to bed late because of the concert made getting up to go to the gym this morning really hard, but I did manage to get there by 6.30am. Tiredness also meant that I wasn’t really up for the workout, but once I got going it was a little easier and I did get a fair bit done before I headed to the pool for a swim.

Back home and I made a raspberry ripple protein shake straight away. I’ve been reading about the use of whey protein in aiding fat burning after cardio workouts and apparently the best time to take it is within thirty minutes of the end of exercising. As I was probably going to be having a shake anyway, it seemed like a good idea to have it for breakfast in hopes that it would help with fat burning. I shall continue to do this for a while and see if it helps my weight loss at all.

I had decided that today I was definitely going to have a proper lunch and dinner, but by lunchtime I really wasn’t in the mood for food. I couldn’t have another shake, otherwise I’m risking straying into Slimfast/Cambridge Diet/Lighter Life territory, which is definitely not part of this way of eating, but I just couldn’t face making (or eating) the chicken and bacon salad I’d intended to have. And so lunch, actually more like an afternoon snack, turned out to be yet more prosciutto and cheese. I still wasn’t really doing the food thing by dinnertime, but forced myself to cook the steak in mushroom sauce with buttered steamed green vegetables that I’d put aside for dinner. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy the vegetables all that much. Although the courgette bake was quite pleasant, the asparagus was rather woody and needed extra steaming before it was edible. I ended up having some yoghurt as I needed ... something (I can’t really explain my feeling, just that I needed something), and this alas put me over my carbs for the day. However, I’m not going to fret about it.
