So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day One Hundred and Five

So I’m pleased to announce that contrary to (my) expectation, I have indeed managed to reach the two stone target that I set back in September. I didn’t have my official gym weigh in yesterday as I’ve been in last minute Christmas and packing for Spain mode (also the reason I haven’t blogged), but my home scales, this morning, tell me that I have reached my target and I’m happy to claim that achievement.

Even though I’ve now reached my target, and I’m now on the wind down to Christmas I was still a good girl and gave away my advent calendar chocolates – it’s been surprising how many people told me I should have one, and even gave away one of the penguins that I’d promised myself at the beginning of December, to my friend Kev, who has been desperate for one for just as long. I do still have two penguins and the nameplate though, so I don’t really feel that bad about giving the other away.

Today’s carbs are going to be over the limit again due to a cheeky chocolate chip cookie which I had to celebrate my friends’ birthday, and the kebab I’m having for tea, after a rather high carb lunch of beef and butternut squash stew with buttered green vegetables. Breakfast was buttery egg and gluten free sausages, so not too bad really and certainly not in the stratosphere carb-wise.

The invitations for meals while I’m in Spain are coming in now and it’s giving me an idea of just how far off plan I’m going to be going while there. Given that I’ll be spending nine days with the generation that would starve if they didn’t have potatoes or bread I think it’s safe to say that any chance for low carb is pretty much out of the window. I know from previous visits how stressy it is for everyone when I attempt to go low carb (I can usually get away with the occasional salad when I’m at home, but not when we’re eating out) so it’s really not worth the arguments. After all this is supposed to be a happy time and I want to enjoy it. Originally I was intending to take some protein powder with me so I could guarantee a breakfast every morning, but I’m not sure whether they sell soya milk out there and semi skimmed milk makes the shake far too high in carbs to contemplate so I’m not going to bother.

So the plan for the Christmas period is to eat and drink whatever I want, enjoy myself and then start back in the gym in the new year. The initial target will be to lose any weight I gain back over the next couple of weeks, the longer term goal is to fit into my black miracle dress.

I'm not sure whether I'll get a chance to post while I'm away, so just in case, I'll wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
