So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Eight

Tiredness is definitely taking its toll on me today. Although I slept well last night I was still so tired that I had trouble dragging myself out of bed to go to the gym this morning. I finally managed to get there for 7am, but was still feeling more than half asleep.

I soon found it was much easier to put my body into cardio zone than fat burning zone. To achieve the latter I ended up having to increase the resistance on the machines quite considerably to slow me down. This was really hard work and maybe a little too much for my poor tired body, so the amount of time spent on each was reduced as a result. I also missed out on the weights and one set of stretches.

I was starving while I was working out, but after another large glass of water that was held at bay while I did some urgent work. A stinking headache combined with fatigue hit me just after 11am and instead of breakfast, and as it turned out lunch, I went to bed to sleep it off. The sleep was definitely needed as I didn’t wake until 4pm!

By this time I was no longer feeling hungry, so completed a few more hours work before preparing my dinner: the faux shepherd’s pie with a grilled tomato and a couple of portabello mushrooms (which I’d been meant to have with blue cheese and bacon, earlier in the week when I was having one of my many non-cooking moments).

I’ll be honest that I’m still feeling completely drained and tired, even after all that sleep, and still a little headachy. I guess the day 5 feeling just hit me – although I don’t feel fluey, just knackered. I shall see how I’m feeling in the morning. I may give the early start at the gym a miss, but only if I really can’t get out of bed.

Today should be measuring day, but that’s going to be delayed as I’ve mislaid my tape measure and can’t be bothered to look for it tonight (pretty much the over-riding feeling at the moment).

It’s also time to go shopping again (as I’ve pretty much only got faux shepherd’s pie left) and so I need plan another weeks food. I’m looking for tasty and easy (i.e. little cooking) meals which are low in carbs so if anyone has any recipes or can recommend any good low carb cookery books please feel free to post them in the comments. I did ask on Twitter and Facebook and got a couple of responses, but unfortunately, nice as they sounded, they contain things that I can’t eat on stage one for the IPD.

This stage is really hard core so it means that I can’t have any fruit or any of the ‘good’ carb foods like brown rice, pasta etc. so my choices are a little limited. But hopefully I’ll find enough new recipes to help keep it from getting too samey (no more faux shepherd’s pie for a while after this lot is gone).

Time to head off to bed now for another sleep. Hopefully I’ll be feeling much more awake and alert tomorrow!
