So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Seven

Once again I didn’t get a chance to post my blog on the day. This was due to extreme fatigue after a long day at work and a long work out at the gym and by the time I’d had something to eat, I was ready for nothing else but bed.

Now that I’m almost back to the machine levels I was at before I went on holiday (which was much quicker than the original effort) I thought it was time to consider changing my work out. A chat with Nicole, one of the lovely fitness trainers was quite illuminating. According to her, my current work out is a cardio not a fat burning one and so instead of helping me to lose fat (and weight), it’s burning up my carbs – not exactly recommended when I’m eating so few. She suggested that I begin by changing my current work out just slightly so that I’m in the fat burning zone rather than the cardio zone.  So as from tomorrow, I’m going to give that a go and then, when I have a little time to spare, I shall get a new work out, which should be a little more challenging.

For a nice change I had avocado and Philadelphia cheese wrapped in smoked salmon, with the faux shepherd’s pie for lunch with a side salad and blue cheese dressing. A mid afternoon dip (due to working on the most boring job known to man which almost had me dropping off) meant that I also had a couple of Babybels. Dinner was a shish and doner kebab, without the pitta bread due to a complete lack of interest in doing anything but eating and sleeping. I’m not entirely sure about the nutrition content of doner meat, as Fitday is an American database and they don’t appear to have kebabs (although I’m aware from our recent holiday that they call them gyro’s – but even that doesn’t appear), but as it’s a meat product it’s unlikely to be too high in carbs (at least not enough to bust my limit). Also when I low-carbed before I used to eat kebab’s without any bad effects.

What I need to do is find my little book which lists all the carbs for just about everything, including eating out and take aways so I can log it correctly and make a custom food in my log for future reference.

Today’s exercise: Bike = 10 mins; Treadmill = 7 mins; Arm bike = 10 mins; Stretching = 10 mins; Standing Arm Bike = 5 mins; Weights and Swiss Ball = 5 mins; Bike = 6 mins; Swimming = 20 lengths

Exercising to: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J K Rowling read by Stephen Fry (UK Edition)
Weight Loss = 5lbs
