So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Six

Working days are a bit of a palaver as I have to remember to take my breakfast and lunch and also my gym kit. I have discovered that getting to the gym on these days requires me to drive to Bridgewood car park and leave my car there for getting the coach to London rather than go for the five minute walk to the bus stop. If I walk I can almost guarantee that when I get home I won’t leave the house again to go to the gym as I’m too knackered. Of course I always feel better after a workout however tired I am, but that doesn’t seem to matter to my brain. Driving means that I have to drive home, so I might as well drive to the gym instead.

Tuesday is obviously a popular day at the gym because it was the busiest I’ve ever seen it. This meant that I wasn’t able to do everything I normally do, due to other people using the equipment (the sort of people who can quite happily spend thirty minutes or more on one machine). I therefore upped the level of the machines that I did work on and swam a bit extra to make up for it.

Today was weigh-in day and I’m hugely pleased to report that I’ve lost five pounds in the last week. Normally I wouldn’t expect to lose such a large amount, but the IPD does tend to show a large loss in the first week. It’s unlikely that this type of loss will continue, but at least it gives me a good boost to start and makes me feel that it was worth doing. The interesting thing will be to see if there’s any difference in the inches (measuring takes place on Thursdays). The last time I followed the IPD I found that my weight loss was quite minimal to begin with, but the inches disappeared quite quickly. See, I said I felt thinner!

So breakfast was egg mayonnaise again with the remainder of the sausages I cooked yesterday and lunch was yet more of the faux shepherd’s pie with a small side salad and blue cheese dressing. Amazingly I didn’t have any mid morning/afternoon cravings, so had no need for the Babybel or mini salami that I’d taken just in case. I also had two cups of Rooibos and Vanilla tea as I’m getting a little fed up with only drinking water (I’ve had nothing but water since last Thursday). By the time I got home from the gym it was almost 9pm and I couldn’t be bothered to cook (probably not much of a surprise). Instead I had some prosciutto (yes I am addicted to the stuff!) and in an attempt to up my carbs some smoked salmon and full fat Philadelphia cheese.

Unfortunately it’s still under the 20 gram minimum, but about the only thing I have left to eat (without cooking) until I go shopping is faux shepherds pie – and although I love it, I really don’t want two portions a day, so today will finish just slightly under (although I did have an extra strong mint earlier which probably takes care of those extra carbs).

Feeling completely shattered now. Hopefully this will mean I’ll get a decent night’s sleep as it’s been a few days since I last had a good one.
