So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Nine

No gym for me today as I really needed to sleep – in fact I didn’t get up until almost 9am, so I definitely needed it. Also, I had the dentist this afternoon and went shopping after, so by the time I got home I couldn’t be bothered to go back out. I think it’s probably doing my body good to be having a day off anyway. However I will be going to the gym tomorrow morning to make up for not going today.

Breakfast was gluten free sausages with a lush mashed hard boiled egg and butter mixture heavily seasoned with pepper which came from the pink bible. Lunch (more like afternoon tea) was prosciutto and dinner was faux shepherd’s pie with the usual sauced salad (only two more portions left). My fridge is now re-stocked with all manner of green things, cream, cheese, meat and fish - all I have to do now is work out when I’m going to cook the things I need to make. A something more craving hit whilst playing on the computer tonight and so I had my chocolate cream special which upped my carb level to mid 20’s.

I have to admit I did find it really hard not to buy any fruit while I was at the supermarket, especially as they had some lovely raspberries on special offer, but amazingly I wasn’t at all bothered about chocolate or bread – even when someone had placed a bag of (my favourite) giant chocolate buttons in the middle of the ham section just to tempt me.

Having re-read the pink bible again it stresses the importance of having three meals a day (working, I assume, on a similar principle as the six word diet). As I’m not always so good at doing this I’ve bought some soya milk (yuk – although Asda’s organic is the best of a bad tasting bunch) which I can use in a protein shake if food doesn’t appeal, or I don’t have time.

I haven’t yet located my tape measure, but I’ll find it tomorrow. Not sure yet whether I’ll post tomorrow or Sunday as I’m off to a concert in the evening and won’t be back ‘til late. It’ll also be a challenge food-wise as I’ll either have to have dinner really early, which means I’m likely to get hungry later on, or eat out.

Today’s exercise: Shaking from being at the Dentist (I hate it); mooching round Asda and carrying all my shopping up the stairs to my flat
Carb's Eaten: 26.3G
Exercising to: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J K Rowling read by Stephen Fry (UK Edition) - I was listening to this at the dentist and while I was shopping
Weight Loss = 5lbs
Inch Loss = 0
Mood: Vaguely motivated
