So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Five

So when I woke this morning I was pleased to discover that unlike the voices of doom (India and Neris) in the pink bible suggested would be the case, I wasn’t suffering from flu-like symptoms or generally feeling like crap, in fact I was feeling great. Even though I didn’t have a very good night’s sleep, I was feeling full of energy and had little problem getting up and getting to the gym. Made it just after 6am and slowly made my way around the equipment, increasing the resistance and lengthening the time spent on some of it. I even added a new one – the standing arm bike which is much harder on the back and legs than the seated version.

After a good workout, I had the usual daily swim and the muscle relax/wind down in the hot tub, then home to breakfast of gluten free sausages (no carbs at all!) and egg mayonnaise.
However, by midday, the nagging headache had kicked in again - a regular occurrence it seems and so lunch was, as always, forgone for a nap instead. Awaking refreshed, I feasted (also seemingly as usual) on prosciutto.

Dinner was the faux shepherd’s pie – as it will be for some time as I’ve got loads left still, with a mixed salad dressed with the blue cheese dressing. And it tasted great – I was absolutely starving!

Work tomorrow means a load of preparation, both of gym kit and lunch and snacks, as I don’t want to get caught out and end up undoing all my good work by finding myself hungry at work.

Tomorrow is also weigh-in day and I’m hoping for a good result. I certainly feel slimmer, which, whilst it may seem little optimistic, is helping to keep me on the straight and narrow.
