So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day One

I had rather a late night last night so I didn't manage to get up and get to the gym by 6am as I had originally planned, but I was there for 7am and ran through the programme the trainers devised for me when I first started at the gym way back in May. After Wednesday’s killer session I was surprised to find that it was a little easier this morning and although it was still hugely knackering, it wasn’t quite as bad as last time. Let’s hope it continues to get easier.

As anyone who knows me well knows I have the attention span of a three year old, so have trouble doing long stints on any one machine, even when I try to concentrate on listening to my I-pod and forget the fact I’m working out. I’m not sure if this is a problem in the longer term, but it’s one of a few things I’m going to discuss with one of the trainers when I get a bit more time. After an hour in the gym, I moved to the swimming pool where I completed 20 lengths of the pool before a nice soak in the hot tub, which I’ve found helps to stop my muscles from aching too badly and then ten minutes in the steam room in an attempt to try and clear my sinuses which I am still having a major problem with.

Time, then, to head to Asda to get the shopping for my first week on the IPD. Mission accomplished I headed home and proceeded to continue the exercise by lugging all the heavy bags up the stairs to my flat. A light breakfast of prosciutto ham and a litre of water followed (I was supposed to have a cooked breakfast to kick off the plan in style, but as ever couldn’t be bothered to cook) and then (once I’d entered all my food and exercise details on Fitday) it was time to work.

By this afternoon I had a headache and so, in lieu of a late lunch, I went to bed to try and sleep it off, which I succeeded in doing. But on waking I had a sore throat and am absolutely freezing. Even though the temperature in my flat is 21 degrees I am currently wrapped in jumpers and thermal socks and wondering where my fingerless gloves are so I can warm up my hands. I even contemplated putting the heating on except that it won’t kick in until the morning and I’ll probably be fine by then and I object to even thinking about it when it’s only early September. Not sure what is going on but suspect my body is trying to sabotage my new regime. But I’m not going to let it win. I will be at the gym tomorrow morning.

I’m off now to make dinner – a nice piece of peppered sirloin steak with a creamy mushroom sauce and a rocket and avocado salad with blue cheese dressing – nom nom nom!

By the way, does anyone else other than me listen to audiobooks rather than music at the gym?

Today’s exercise: Bike = 5 mins; Stretching = 10 mins; Treadmill = 5 mins; Arm bike = 10 mins; Arc trainer = 5 mins; Swiss ball and weights = 10 mins; Bike = 5 mins; Swimming = 20 lengths
