So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Thirty Five

I am absolutely knackered today!

I had real trouble waking up this morning, after sleeping very deeply last night and fell asleep on the coach on the way into work (very unusual) which left me feeling a bit dull and thick headed. I also ached like you wouldn’t believe – I now definitely know the power plate workouts are doing something.

Breakfast was gluten free sausages with buttery peppered egg taken with my cocktail of supplements and a cup of rooibos and vanilla tea. However, one supplement is missing as I have made the decision to stop taking the psyllium (for the time being at least). Having finally got round to catching up with the IPD forum, I discovered a thread in which a lot of people were complaining that psyllium wasn’t helping them and they were just feeling bloated and blocked. As this is still the case with me, I’ve decided to give it a break for a few weeks to see what happens.

Also on the forum I discovered several threads about slow cooker recipes (I have a slow cooker in my cupboard that I’ve never used so hopefully it’ll give me the inspiration to dig it out) and one about a place that sells different flavours of whey protein (and in sample sizes). As these flavours include banana cream, chocolate mint and raspberry ripple I feel I need to give them a try, although I think I may need to ration them to one a week. Whilst they are the same amount of carbs (or less) than the Holland and Barrett brand I currently use, I assume that they are going to be sweeter and overuse could be a slippery slope to re-addiction to sweet things. However, assuming they taste okay – and the reviews indicate they do, they should make a nice treat and can probably be mixed with the H&B stuff to reduce their sweetness and increase the amount of time they last.

I have also decided to give up going to the gym on Wednesday evening. Originally I used to go then because Aqua Zumba was on, but this has now stopped and so I’ve been doing cardio instead. However, after last week’s power plate and mega workout with Kemsley I was in too much pain to go to the gym on Thursday morning. As I prefer to do my session in the morning where possible, and with the power plate workout becoming more challenging by the week, giving up Wednesday nights seems like a sensible option.

There was a charity book sale at work today and I bought another new cookery book. Although at first glance it would seem a pretty bad choice considering my way of eating, I was actually pretty impressed at how many recipes I could make and adapt. To be honest I wasn’t thinking about carbs when I bought it (obviously, with all the lovely pasta recipes it contains) but I’d really enjoyed watching the series when I was in Spain and it reminded me of the programme and the time out there. Lugging home huge amounts of books (I bought a whole load of kids books as presents for my nephew too) wasn’t really an option today with my sore arms, so I left half of them at work and will bring them home next week when I’m feeling less achy.

Lunch was supposed to be chilli bake with mixed salad leaves but I wasn’t feeling very hungry so I had the chilli and left the lettuce, although I didn’t really want that either. This evening I was feeling hungry so had chicken in a lemon and tarragon cream sauce with buttered asparagus and mangetout followed by some chocolate cream (I think the whey powder thing gave me a craving, as did someone bringing in lovely Spanish chocolates and biscuits, which I was very good and ignored). It was all good though as I was still within my carb limit until I remembered that I had an extra strong mint on the way in to work this morning (and we know how carby they are) and I had a normal cup of tea with semi-skimmed milk when I met up with my friend this afternoon and having added those to my list it brings my carbs to just over the limit.

Tonight I am aching more than ever, and not just in my arms and legs. My abs and inner thighs are definitely feeling it too. I also still feel completely knackered so am heading off for an early night in hopes that sleep will repair my body in preparation for the gym tomorrow morning.
