So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Thirty Four

Apologies for the lateness again but I had no time to post yesterday. By the time I’d got back from the gym, had something to eat and prepared my food for work it was time for bed.

I had a long and boring day at work and was more than ready for my gym session, even though it was power plate with Siobhan, which is always hard work. Sure enough she upped the pace once more, with two sets of three exercises repeated twice and ending with a combo that just about finished me off.

I also discussed my cardio programme with her and we discovered that Kemsley really hadn’t had a clue about what she’d put down for me. She explained that the heart rate target that I’d been so worried about not hitting was a progressive thing and that she didn’t expect it to be that rate now, but it would be heading that way by the time of my next review. However, just to make sure that I know exactly what I’m doing with the programme, and so she can monitor my heart rate herself, I’ve scheduled a session with her on Monday morning to quickly run through it. I feel much happier knowing that what I’ve been doing re my heart rate is okay and I’m not wrong in how I’ve been training.

I even managed a small warm up session before the power plate lesson and went for my usual swim (although somewhat reduced due to aching muscles) before relaxing in the hot tub with a friend of mine who happened to be at the gym at the same time.

Food for the day was peppered ham, cream cheese and avocado roll ups for breakfast with a cup of rooibos and vanilla tea, followed by a couple of Babybel cheddars for a mid morning snack. Lunch was tuna salad nicoise with a lemon vinaigrette dressing and another cup of tea. After the gym I visited the kebab shop for my weekly shish and doner kebab with salad (no pitta). I’m still having trouble finding a carb value for the doner meat as everything online just seems to go on about how huge the calories are (and I’m not bothered about them), although it does appear that it is pretty much just meat so I’ve put it into Fitday as cooked lamb. I did (sadly) measure each of the elements separately before eating this week so I’ve got a standard measurement for future kebabs as they tend to be about the same size.

I also had an e-mail to say that my Splashgear MP3 player has been despatched so hopefully that will be with me soon.

Today’s exercise:  Bike = 10 mins; Stretching = 10 mins; Arc Trainer = 5 mins; Power Plate = 30 mins; Swimming = 20 lengths
Carb's Eaten: 21.4G
Exercising to: Siobhan’s nagging (I mean instructional tone) – she’s lovely really!
Weight Loss = 12lbs
Inch Loss = 7.5
Mood: Tired but happy

(I had intended to post this earlier today but my work browser isn’t supported by blogger - we’re still running IE6!)
