So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Twenty Nine

Even after covering most of my body in arnica gel last night, I was aching so much that it took me ages to fall asleep. This morning it was completely seized up and just moving was a problem. Not willing to risk hurting myself by overdoing it at the gym, I decided to give it a miss for a day to give my body a chance to recover.

Breakfast was a protein shake, but for a change I made it a sweet one with a teaspoon each of cocoa and Splenda. It was okay, but I didn’t prefer it any more than the non-sweet one so I’ll probably not bother with that in the future. I wasn’t really hungry by lunchtime so I had some prosciutto and a couple of pieces of cheese. This week I’ve bought the Wyke Farms mini cheese selection to try and am pleased to discover that even their mild cheddar has a nice taste (I’m not usually a fan of mild cheese).

Due to the aching I really haven’t moved around much, spending most of the day on the computer working. By the time the work day had finished I had a nagging headache to add to the other aches so I went to bed for a couple of hours. On waking I felt much better on all fronts, so I’ll be okay to go to the gym tomorrow as normal.

I was rather late starting dinner, so I had a grab pack of wafer thin ham as a snack whilst I was cooking the chilli bake. As it takes quite a time to do it wasn’t finished until 10.30pm. Initially I was thinking I should have something else to eat instead as it was a bit late, but hunger dulled by the ham I decided to wait and I’m glad I did. I had the bake with the last portion of broccoli/cauli mash with a large glass of sparkling cherry flavoured water and enjoyed every mouthful of it. Whilst I was waiting for it to cook I recalculated the ingredients in Fitday and discovered that my previous figures had been completely wrong and far too high (I think I must have forgotten to split it into portions). Although it’s now nowhere near as high as it was previously, it’s still not something I can eat everyday.

I still haven’t opened the box with the Soda Stream yet, but I have a few bottles of sparkling water left so it’s not that important right now. I must get round to it though as it’s taking up space in my lounge. I also haven’t measured myself yet, but I’ll make an effort to do it tomorrow.

Today I found a product which will help me with my exercising and I really want to buy it. It’s a waterproof MP3 player which means I can continue to listen to music whilst I swim – although the thought did occur to me that it meant I’d swim even more than I do already – and Mrs H3  commented on my Facebook that I’d never get out of the water once I have it. I have put it on my Amazon wish list for the time being, but I think tomorrow it might come off and go into my basket and be bought instead!
