So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Twenty Three

I didn’t post last night as I wasn’t feeling too good. The day started okay, with the usual trip to the gym followed by the psyllium tablets and breakfast of smoked salmon, cream cheese and avocado roll ups.

Taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, I went to the pub in the afternoon to have a late lunch and catch up with friends I haven’t seen for a few weeks. While I was there I had a Wexford Steak (rump steak topped with stilton cheese and mushrooms and covered in pepper sauce) with a mixed salad dressed with mayonnaise. My will power at the moment is pretty good, so I didn’t eat the onion rings (that I’d forgotten were part of the meal so hadn’t told them I didn’t want) or some of the tomato (they are quite carby and I had been given two tomatoes which is way too much on Phase One). I did however have two small glasses of Pinot Grigio wine (which is far less than I’d normally consume during an afternoon with my friends) which I interspersed with pints of soda water so I didn’t overdo it and although this did push me over the maximum amount of carbs for the day, it wasn’t by much and hopefully, after a few low days will even out and not affect my weight loss too much.

I really wasn’t hungry in the evening, especially after taking yet more psyllium, but eventually forced myself to have a protein shake (about the only thing I could even face having and something that didn’t require much in the way of preparation). This left me feeling completely stuffed and more than a little queasy.

The pink bible makes it very clear that you have to eat three meals a day (plus snacks) so that your body keeps burning the fat, but I’m finding this a real struggle, especially now I’ve added the psyllium – which just seems to be filling me up. Certainly it hasn’t yet had the intended or expected effect and instead of feeling thinner I feel bloated and sluggish.

I will continue to take the psyllium for the time being, in case it just takes a while for it to work, although I was under the (possibly mistaken) impression that it was effective pretty much immediately. Also I guess feeling full is better than feeling hungry!
