So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Thirty Two

Woke early this morning (especially for a Sunday) so I could watch the Formula One Grand Prix and the Rugby World Cup quarter finals. Was feeling a little better than yesterday – at least my nose isn’t running quite so profusely and I’m not sneezing so much, although my throat is still a bit raw.

I wasn’t feeling very hungry so I had a protein shake. I think I may have drunk it too quickly though as fairly shortly afterwards I started feeling really sick. I did have a couple of large glasses of water to try and help get rid of the nausea, but by mid morning I was feeling pretty dreadful so I went back to bed for a couple of hours.

This morning I also tried the green tea with lemongrass and ginger which, I’m sorry to say, tasted even worse than the honey version. Without sweetener it was nasty, with sweetener it was indescribably nasty. I didn’t even wait until it had cooled down in hopes it might taste better, I just chucked it straight down the sink. The only good thing about it is that it makes me appreciate the rooibos and vanilla that much more.

This afternoon was spent mainly doing laundry and cooking (if I’m being honest it was actually mainly spent playing Farmville, but I did do that other stuff too). I stopped farming briefly to make myself a cheese and mushroom omelette for lunch (I know everyone knows what an omelette looks like but I’ve posted a picture of it as it’s the first time I’ve ever managed to make one properly, without it falling apart when I try to plate it, so it’s a sort of proud moment for me).

Later I decided to tackle one of the recipes in my new cookery book - a pepperoni and mushroom pizza quiche which I can freeze and use for lunches later in the month. Cooking this made me a little peckish so I had some wafer thin ham and a few bits of pepperoni that didn’t fit onto my pizza.

I had intended to have a go at another recipe from the book for my dinner, but by the time I’d finished cooking the quiche it was getting a bit late and as nice as it sounded, prosciutto-wrapped salmon with red wine butter seemed like a bit too much of a faff, so instead I pan fried the salmon and covered it with a lemon and dill cream sauce, served with the usual mixed salad. With this I had a glass of the lemon and lime sparkling water I bought last week. I have to admit that I’m not keen as it tastes to me a bit too much like low-calorie lemonade (which I have discovered is also zero carbs but I won't be drinking). My carbs are a little under the minimum today, but after two days of them being over I don’t think this is a bad thing.

I finally got round to measuring myself this morning (a month after I last did so) and apparently I’ve lost 7 ½ inches over my body since then. I guess this makes up for not having lost any more weight. Interestingly, my biceps have increased by an inch which is either because I didn’t measure properly last time (quite possible) or because my muscles are growing from the exercise I’ve been doing (also possible). However, I’m hoping that this trend isn’t going to continue as my goal is obviously to lose, not gain inches.
