So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Fifty Eight

I had a rotten night’s sleep although I’m not sure why. This, along with getting to bed late because of the concert made getting up to go to the gym this morning really hard, but I did manage to get there by 6.30am. Tiredness also meant that I wasn’t really up for the workout, but once I got going it was a little easier and I did get a fair bit done before I headed to the pool for a swim.

Back home and I made a raspberry ripple protein shake straight away. I’ve been reading about the use of whey protein in aiding fat burning after cardio workouts and apparently the best time to take it is within thirty minutes of the end of exercising. As I was probably going to be having a shake anyway, it seemed like a good idea to have it for breakfast in hopes that it would help with fat burning. I shall continue to do this for a while and see if it helps my weight loss at all.

I had decided that today I was definitely going to have a proper lunch and dinner, but by lunchtime I really wasn’t in the mood for food. I couldn’t have another shake, otherwise I’m risking straying into Slimfast/Cambridge Diet/Lighter Life territory, which is definitely not part of this way of eating, but I just couldn’t face making (or eating) the chicken and bacon salad I’d intended to have. And so lunch, actually more like an afternoon snack, turned out to be yet more prosciutto and cheese. I still wasn’t really doing the food thing by dinnertime, but forced myself to cook the steak in mushroom sauce with buttered steamed green vegetables that I’d put aside for dinner. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy the vegetables all that much. Although the courgette bake was quite pleasant, the asparagus was rather woody and needed extra steaming before it was edible. I ended up having some yoghurt as I needed ... something (I can’t really explain my feeling, just that I needed something), and this alas put me over my carbs for the day. However, I’m not going to fret about it.
