So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Seventy Two

Made it to the gym this morning, but still feeling half fatigued for some reason so I didn’t go for the full work out times, although I did try to do a bit on each machine.  This was followed by a trip to Asda where I stocked up on food including the ingredients for a beef stew (yep I’m definitely going to use that slow cooker this week, finally!)

Although I’m not supposed to have carrots as they are too carby for phase one I decided that one medium carrot split between four portions of stew weren’t going to kill, so that too will be going into it along with some butternut squash, onions, mushrooms and a little red wine. It’s making my mouth water just thinking about it. I was a bit naughty and bought some raspberries (because they were reduced), but I really fancied them and have split them over two days to diffuse the impact of such high carbs slightly. I also bought a nice piece of beef so I can make a roast dinner, with celeriac dauphinoise instead of potatoes.

Last night I was going for a meal before heading off to the cinema and so I spent quite a lot of time downloading and studying nutritional information for various restaurants (yep I really am that sad these days). Having got over the shock that a super salad from Zizzi was 61g of carbs! (Yes, really – and no, I have absolutely no idea how they can make salad that carby), I soon realised that there was no point in looking. Everything from the sort of places we were likely to be eating were going to be huge carb-wise and, if you were calorie counting (which of course I’m not), enough to make you cry. Franchise restaurants really do not cater for those who are low-carbing (or dieting in general, I guess), so I decided to take the sensible approach of just having what I wanted and not worrying about it.

However, once we arrived at Pizza Express I changed my mind about getting what I wanted (which would have been a pizza) and instead went for a salad. They do a fabulous salad containing warm garlic mushrooms, baby mozzarella, avocado, roasted tomatoes, baby spinach, rocket and balsamic syrup, honey & mustard dressing. If I’d been feeling really virtuous I’d have skipped the dressing as it is quite high carb, but I’d already sacrificed the accompanying dough sticks (I did have one, the other three I gave to Mrs H3) and the cheesy garlic bread that we would usually have had as a starter and so I decided to have the dressing. Unfortunately, although Pizza Express do publish the calories for their food, like most places they don’t feel the need to say how many carbs it is so I couldn’t work it out. I decided to log it as 20g because of the dressing. I don’t think that would be too far off.

When we go to the cinema we usually also have a Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and, quite often, a Tango Ice Blast (I think it’s quite easy to see why I’m overweight with the stuff I used to eat on a regularly occurring night out). I did seriously consider an ice cream (one scoop rather than the usual two with chocolate sauce and chocolate pieces and nuts) and had looked up the carb count of my favourite, Chunky Monkey (31g per serving if you’re interested) just in case I decided to go for it. Whilst I really was quite eager, Mrs H3 managed to talk me out of it and instead I had two extra strong mints during the film, which whilst not helping the count for the day meant I’d had 27g less than if I’d succumbed to the banana goodness.
