So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Sixty Six

Sorry, late night so I didn’t get this posted yesterday.

I met an old crafting friend of mine at Lakeside this morning. I’m not really a shopping type of person so don’t tend to spend much time in malls so it was quite a novel experience for me. Fortunately it wasn’t too busy, but it was full of temptation!

The first place we went was to Starbucks, where I was informed they were doing special seasonal flavours of drinks. I don’t drink coffee and therefore wasn’t tempted by the gingerbread latte and all those other lovely sounding things, but I do love their tea Chai Latte and it was hard not order one (the vente size that I normally drink works out about 56g of carbs per portion!) I was very good though and stuck to a cup of normal tea with some whole fat milk – not quite so tasty, but certainly more virtuous.

Fortunately I had a protein shake before I left as the whole place was designed to tempt you with food. I’ve not really noticed this before, but I suspect that as I’m actively avoiding all those things that are on sale in the shopping centre it was far more obvious to me. Everywhere we went there was food on sale. From ice cream to cupcakes to cookies to smoothies – and all of them smelt lovely. After a few hours of walking around I was absolutely starving. But it was almost impossible to find anything that could be eaten on the hoof without massively breaking the carb limit.

I did manage to stay strong and not have anything to eat so was more than ready for my chicken in tarragon and lemon sauce and salad when I finally got home.

There was just enough time to eat before heading out for the evening – to the Prince Charles Cinema to see Labyrinth – during which several (and I’ll be honest I lost count, although I think it was four) extra strong mints were consumed. Fortunately after yesterday’s blow out with the cider, today’s carbs were much more reasonable.

Arriving home at almost 1am I was starving and treated myself to some of the almond cheesy garlic bread (I’d got it out of the freezer for dinner, but then remembered I was going out) along with some prosciutto and a greek yoghurt.

Today’s exercise:  hours and hours of walking round Lakeside followed by a trek across London in full fancy dress
Carb's Eaten: 29.3G
Exercising to: The divine music of Mr Bowie - Labyrinth rules!
Weight Loss = 1 stone and 2 pounds
Inch Loss = 12.5 inches
MoodHaving fun
