So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Seventy

Felt a little better this morning, although with another day of nightmare spreadsheets to face I was fully expecting the headache to return at some point. Having said that I was meeting friends for lunch which meant that I was actually going to get a chance to leave my desk for once and get some fresh air which I was hoping would make a difference.

Breakfast was the rest of the hugely high calorie, but very low carb sausage and egg muffins along with a cup of Vanilla and Rooibos tea (hurrah, finally remembered to take it into work).

I was a little worried about lunch as we were going to an Italian cafe specializing in sandwiches and pasta, with little scope for anything low carb. There was the possibility of some salad as they have lettuce, cucumber and tomato to put in the sandwiches, but I wasn’t really in the mood as I’ve been feeling cold all day. As predicted there wasn’t much choice for me, but I did manage to get an omelette and some salad (having refused the chips which seemed to confuse the waitress). Obviously I don’t know exactly what ingredients were used in the omelette, but I have assumed three eggs as it was quite big. Although it was supposedly bacon and cheese there was hardly any of either of those, but at least it wasn’t just a salad and I managed to stay low carb.

What I did forget though were my sweeteners. I had a large mug of normal tea with my meal and had to use two teaspoons of sugar as it was quite strong (I just cannot break the sweet tea habit however hard I try). Note to self: Make sure you carry sweeteners at all times!

Those two spoons of sugar and the stick of chewing gum I had later used up almost 10g of carbs which is a huge amount (one third of my days allowance to be precise). Fortunately the low carb breakfast and dinner (ham, cheese and avocado roll ups and a banana protein shake) evened it out a bit, and, being serious, if I hadn’t had them I’d be under my minimum level for the day.

My friend gave me a Thornton's chocolate advent calendar, which her husband has bought me as a gift every year for the last ten years, so it would have been rude to turn it down. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. Obviously part of me is thinking one little chocolate a day isn't going to kill me, but really I know this isn't true, especially after seventy days (so far) without any chocolate bars. Firstly it'll get me addicted to sugar and chocolate again and secondly even if I keep within my carb limit it may well derail me which I really don't want with my two stone goal already on dodgy ground. I think I might give most of the chocolates to my co-workers and just have the name plaque and the two small penguins, which I can save until I go to Spain. This seems to me like a good compromise.

I am ending the day feeling a little headachy again, but nothing like yesterday. Hopefully it’ll be gone in the morning when I get up for the gym.
