So this is my new diet and fitness blog. The reasoning behind it is simple. I’m forty five years old, incredibly overweight and even more unfit. Having moved to working at home three days a week, my already sedentary lifestyle has become almost comatose. Sitting at the computer, moving only to visit the toilet or make a cup of tea does not make for a healthy lifestyle, especially when the only other exercise I now get (having stopped working in the pub where at least I was walking a lot) is the stroll to and from the bus stop on work days. It is abundantly clear that changes need to be made before I either turn into one of those people in the freaky dieting shows on the telly or die of some nasty weight/unfitness related illness.

To this end I have joined a gym to improve my fitness and am about to embark on the latest attempt to lose weight through a new eating regime (I don’t want to say the ‘D’ word as I think it’s rather negative). As I chronicle my journey to greater fitness, better health and weight loss there will be daily posts as I think this will help to keep me focussed and hopefully help me to stick to the plan during the bad times I know lie ahead. I intend it to be honest as I need to acknowledge my weaknesses and fails as well as my good progress, which could be painful, but will hopefully, eventually be cathartic and helpful.

Day Fifty Five

Today began terribly. The wet weather is making my arthritis play up big time making walking difficult and painful, I started getting bad stomach cramps whilst on the coach into work (due no doubt to the lack of proper food over the last few days), I fell over in the park on the way to work, grazing my knees, elbows and hands and almost smashing my glasses (as well as giving my pride battering) and to cap it all I had a nosebleed. And after that great start we were evacuated from the building because of a fire drill. I fully expected it to rain again, to really put a damper on things, but fortunately it stayed dry.

I had no breakfast prepared because of my problem with facing food yesterday, and so I had to go to the staff canteen for breakfast of scrambled egg, bacon and one mushroom at an extortionate price. Aware that I would need to eat something at lunchtime, but unable to care one way or another I had grabbed the first box I came across in the freezer, which turned out to be moussaka, to which I added a selection of green vegetables with butter (in a steamer bag).

However, because I was feeling sorry for myself (which is a terrible excuse I know, but sometimes you just can’t help it) I helped to celebrate a work colleague’s 40th anniversary with a cake (a Krispy Kreme glazed ring donut to be precise, which the helpful interwebs tell me is 36G of carbs!), which I was fully aware would take me WELL over my carb count for the day – but at that moment I really didn’t care.

Now I know this isn’t really the right attitude, but I’ve just realised that I haven’t had a single bar of chocolate, biscuit or cake etc. for fifty five days now (which I think is pretty good going) and I don’t think one cake is going to kill me in the great scheme of things. Also, I had my usual killer power plate session in the evening, along with a decent swimming session, which must have helped to deflect the ill effects somewhat.

And I have to say that I really enjoyed it – although afterwards it did make me feel rather drowsy and lethargic.

As I didn’t get back from the gym until almost 10pm (my friend Karen and I spent almost an hour in the hot tub putting the world to rights - which was great for my poor bruised knees) I really wasn’t in the mood for cooking (surprise surprise) and so I had (yep you guessed it) a raspberry ripple protein shake and some prosciutto with a couple of Babybels.

Because of the moussaka I would have been just over my limit for the day anyway even without the donut, but I think I did pretty well to stop there.

Carb's Eaten: 66.1G
